What we do

Breakbulk and out-of-gauge cargo

SMSEA Freight India Pvt. Ltd. offers a wide range of services to handle every type of breakbulk cargo, from large construction loads to machinery that simply will not go in a box.

Breakbulk is planned before it is booked. The lift, the route and the securing all have to work together, and a decision made late — the wrong vessel, an unchecked bridge clearance — is expensive to undo. The planning is the service.

What it covers

Included in every break bulk job

01

Out-of-gauge and oversized

Cargo that exceeds container dimensions, moved on flat racks, open tops or as conventional breakbulk.

02

Lift and stow planning

How it will be lifted, where it will sit and how it will be secured — decided before the vessel is booked.

03

Port handling

Coordination with terminal and stevedores so specialised equipment is on the quay when the cargo is.

04

Route surveys

Checking the inland route for height, weight and turning limits before the cargo is on a trailer.

Worth knowing

Why shippers choose break bulk

01

No container dimension limit

Cargo that exceeds container dimensions moves as it is, without being cut down or split.

02

The lift is planned, not improvised

Knowing how it will be lifted and secured before the vessel is booked prevents the expensive surprises.

03

Equipment waiting on the quay

Coordination with terminal and stevedores means the right gear is there when the cargo is.

04

Inland route checked first

Height, weight and turning limits surveyed before a trailer is loaded, not after it is stuck.

05

Direct port-to-port options

Breakbulk services can avoid the transhipments a container routing would need.

06

One team through every stage

Lift, sea leg, permits and delivery run by the same people, so nothing falls between vendors.

Frequently asked

Questions we get about break bulk

When does cargo become breakbulk?

When it will not fit or cannot safely travel inside a standard container — because of length, height, width or weight. Flat racks and open tops cover part of that range; beyond it, conventional breakbulk.

What do you need from me to quote?

Dimensions and weight of each piece, the lifting points, the collection and delivery addresses, and the timing. Photos and a drawing help more than anything else.

Do you arrange the permits?

Yes, movement permissions, escorts and route clearances are arranged as part of the plan rather than left to the transporter.

How far ahead should I book?

Earlier than a container shipment. The vessel, the equipment and the permits all have lead times, and squeezing them is where cost gets added.

Can you survey the route first?

Yes. For anything tall, heavy or wide, a route survey is standard practice and usually pays for itself.

Not sure this is the right mode?

Tell us the cargo. We will tell you how it should move.

If another service fits it better we will say so — including when the answer is that you do not need us at all.
